Approved Alberta Protocols

Guidance Documents

Alberta Environment released revised guidance documents for the Alberta Offset System in January 2011. These documents are essential and must be consulted to determine eligibility within the Alberta offset system as well as provide detailed guidance for meeting all project development and verification criteria. Newly released Protocol Developer guidance document will inform stakeholders on the process and important deadlines for initiating the development of a protocol for review in the Alberta offset system.

Please note the Offset Credit Verification Guidance Document (version 1, September 2007) has been incorporated into the Technical Guidance for Offset Project Developers (version 2.0, January 2011) and is no longer available as a stand alone document.

**Technical Guidance for Offset Project Developers v2.0 (January 2011)

**NEW Technical Guidance for Offset Protocol Developers v1.0 (January 2011)

To assist project and protocol developers Alberta Environment has also released a series of templates that provide minimum criteria for offset project reporting and verification reporting.

*REMOVAL of Calculation Modules due to Protocol Revisions.*

C3 and Carbon Offset Solutions recently removed all calculation modules that were listed for high-level offset project analysis. THESE CALCULATORS WERE EXAMPLES AND NOT TO BE USED FOR ANY PROJECT ASSERTION OR VERIFICATION PURPOSES. Project Developers are responsible for developing project-specific quantification and data management systems.

C3 and Carbon Offset Solutions continues to gives no warranty, express or implied, as to the accuracy, reliability and completeness of any information, formulae or calculations within calculation modules that may have been obtained, and does not accept any liability for loss or damage of whatsoever nature, which may be attributable to the reliance on and use of those calculators.

Additional Guidance for Tillage Management Systems

In response to a number of project developers who have expressed an interest in applying the flexibility mechanism of the Tillage System Protocol or deriving regional custom coefficients for carbon sequestration, The Alberta Government has released two documents. The following documents provide important information on the policy surrounding the use of flexibility mechanisms and the development of custom coefficients in carbon sequestration protocols.

**1 This protocol is being revised to address regulatory additionality against the Renewable Fuel Standard. All changes to this protocol will apply effective April 1, 2011. It is anticipated that a draft protocol will be available for stakeholder review in summer 2011.

**2 Protocol is undergoing review to address known risks in the protocol. No new offset projects will be accepted under these protocols until the reviews are complete or the project has received written approval from Alberta Environment. Please contact Alberta Environment for additional guidance and more information.
