Public Review for the Draft Quantification Protocol for the Capture of CO2 and Permanent Storage in Deep Saline Aquifers

Public Review Period is Complete

The opportunity for generating carbon offsets with this protocol arises from the direct disposal of CO2 from a previous source of emissions, into deep saline aquifers for permanent storage. This protocol scope covers the full carbon capture and storage chain from capture through compression, transport, injection and storage. The source of CO2 is from an industrial facility that operates a primary process, and the carbon capture facility applies a capture technology that uses chemical solvents.

Conservation Cropping Quantification Protocol Public Review

Public Review Period for the Conservation Cropping Quantification Protocol (formerly Tillage Management Quantification Protocol) is Complete 

Protocol Approved and Posted. 

A five year review of the Tillage Management Quantification Protocol was undertaken by Government and is now complete. Main changes and updates to this protocol include: baseline adjustments to reflect increased adoption levels of tillage practices, new opportunities to quantify carbon offsets by reducing summerfallow, and increased requirements for proof of practice change. The results are incorporated into a new Conservation Cropping Protocol.

Protocol Approved and Posted. 

Following the closing of the first public comment period in early 2010, additional work was conducted on this protocol to address submitted comments from stakeholders, a government review, and update the draft for modifications that occurred in the protocol development process. Alberta Environment has requested this protocol complete an additional public posting period to ensure stakeholders review this finalized draft protocol.

The In Block Chipping Protocol completed the 1st and 2nd Rounds of Technical and Stakeholder review with no sustained objection. The protocol addressed all suggestions/comments from the Stakeholder review session and made any necessary revisions. The protocol then entered the public review posting.
