Results for the Second 2008 Compliance Year - Specified Gas Emitters RegulationSecond year compliance results (January 1 to December 31) showed that companies made 1.89 Megatonne emission reductions through internal operational changes, and utilized the Climate Change and Emissions Management Fund for ~62%, used Emission Performance Credits (6.8%) and purchased verified emission offsets created through voluntary projects implemented in Alberta for ~31% of eligible compliance options.
Alberta-based Offset Credits - 2.75 Mt CO2eThe 2008 compliance year saw 25 additional offset projects being created, verified, and registered on the Alberta Offset Registry, with all or portions of these offsets being submitted by regulated facilities for compliance. Ten of the projects were based in the agricultural sector through Tillage Management GHG emission removals, 5 Wind Energy Generation and 3 Biomass Energy projects were registered on the Alberta Registry. Project-types also diversified in Alberta including new projects registered from Aerobic Composting, Acid Gas Injection, Enhanced Oil Recovery, Energy Efficiency, Run-Of-River Electricity Generation, and Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment.
Overall, in the first 18 months of the Regulation, the Alberta Offset System saw 32 projects registered and has serialized over 5 million tonnes of GHG emission reductions or removals on the Alberta Offset Registry. |
